Presidents of the GAA: Seán Kelly

Seán Kelly (born 1952), Kerry, was the thirty-fourth president of the GAA (2003-2006)

The first GAA president from Kerry, Kelly had been a founding member of the St. Patrick’s East Kerry hurling team, before serving as Chairman of the East Kerry, and Kerry County boards.

During his presidency, Kelly introduced a number of new cups, including the Christy Ring Cup, oversaw the completion of the renovation of Croke Park, introduced the All-Ireland Junior and Intermediate Championships, and is credited with concluding the arrangements that allowed the IRFU and FAI to use Croke Park during the redevelopment of Lansdowne Road.

Immediately after his presidency, Kelly served as the Executive Chairman of the Irish Institute of Sport (2006-2008).

He was elected to the European Parliament in 2009, and served on a number of committees, and is currently serving as an MEP.
