Presidents of the GAA: Alf Murray

Alf Murray (1914-1999), Armagh, was the twenty-first president of the GAA (1964-1967)

Alf Murray, born in Co. Down, trained as a teacher in London, where he was an active sportsman, and learned Irish after classes.[1] He became a teacher at Tannaghmore Primary School, Lurgan, where he was later principal, and played on the Armagh Junior Football team that won the Ulster Championship in 1935. In 1935, he joined the Armagh Senior Football team which won the Railway Cup in 1943.

He was secretary of the Armagh County Board while still a player in 1936/1937, and again in 1942/1943, and became Chairman from 1946 to 1949.
