It was with deep regret that Lár na Páirce learned of the death of Tomás Ó Baróid.
Born in Killenaule in 1924, he came to live in Thurles and joined the Thurles Sarsfields Club, as a player and later as an administrator.
Following the resignation of Pat Stakelum as county secretary in 1963, Tomás was elected to succeed him. He remained in the position for thirty-seven years, presiding over a county whose hurling fortunes declined from the brilliant successes of the sixties, through the famine period of the seventies and eighties to the later successes of the nineties.
His contribution to the GAA was recognised nationally when he was elected Trustee of the Association and also his selection on a number of GAA advisory committees.
Following his retirement as county GAA secretary he was elected president of Tipperary County Board, a position he held at the time of his death.
Tomás was predeceased by his wife, Rose, and sympathy is extended to his family.
