Con Murphy (1922-2007), Cork, was a Cork senior hurler and the twenty-fifth president of the GAA (1976-1979).
As a hurler, Con won four All-Ireland medals, five Munster medals, and one National League medal. At club level, he played both hurling and football with Valley Rovers.
He served 17 years as Cork secretary, taking a huge role in the construction of Páirc Uí Chaoimh[1]; fittingly, the official opening of Páirc Uí Chaoimh in 1976 took place during his presidency.
Murphy’s presidency took place during the time of the Troubles, and as president he campaigned on behalf of Crossmaglen Rangers to the British Government, whose pitch had been occupied by the British army[1].
In 1995, Murphy was made a Freeman of the City of Cork.
