Moloney played hurling and football for Galtee Rovers, he became a referee when the appointed referee failed to turn up to a game in 1958.[1] He would go on to referee the All-Ireland finals for football in 1967, 1969, 1973, 1975, and 1977, and for hurling in 1974. He was also referee for the National Hurling League final in New York, between Kilkenny and New York, and travelled to San Francisco with the All-Stars teams in 1972, to referee the exhibition games. He was considered one of the best referees in the GAA.[2]

One of John’s whistles is on display in Lár na Páirce, in the “Knights of the Whistle” exhibit.
