Holycross-Ballycahill, who won the county Tipperary senior hurling title in 1990, were honoured at Semple Stadium on October 25, county hurling final day.
The 26 players on the panel, with their partners, were guests of the Tipperary county board at a reception in the Dome, Semple Stadium, before the matches. They were introduced to the crowd between the intermediate and senior finals and were guests at a dinner at O’Gorman’s, Bohernacrusha, in the evening. Following the meal they were presented with a scroll and a photograph in memory of the occasion.
Part of the practice of the Tipperary county board to recognise senior winners twenty-five years later, the event was a joint sponsorship of the county board, the Tipperary Star and O’Gorman’s Pub & Restaurant.
The victory in 1990 was the fourth success of Holycross-Ballycahill in the county senior hurling championship. The club’s
first victory came in 1948 and this was followed, in quick succession, by two further victories in 1951 and 1954.
Francis Maher had the honour of being captain of all three winning teams and he was present on October 25 to salute the winners of 1990.
Following the victory in 1948 Holycross-Ballycahill player, Pat Stakelum, captained Tipperary to All-Ireland victory in 1949,the first of three-in-a-row. Similarly, Declan Carr, a member of the 1990 team, captained Tipperary to All-Ireland success in 1991.
