Knights of the Whistle: PJ McGrath

PJ McGrath, Mayo, was a club footballer and referee.

McGrath was referee for the 1982 All-Ireland Senior football final.

After his time as referee, he served as chairman of the National Referee’s Committee and of the Central Referee’s Appointment Committee. At the request of then GAA president, Nicky Brennan, in 2007 the CRAC had recruited 440 new referees.[1]

One of PJ’s whistles is on display in Lár na Páirce’s “Knights of the Whistle” exhibit.
